I kinda miss being a loser!
I know it sounds like a crazy thing to say, but I do kinda miss being a loser! I miss the hope I used to feel. I miss being the underdog and having to fight. And I miss the days when my hat simply had a B on it, and not World Champion. What am I talking about? My Boston Red Sox.
October 27, 2004 was a day that no Red Sox fan will ever forget. It was the day that the Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years. Don’t get me wrong, I was like any other Sox fan that night. I was hysterical with happiness and sat on the floor of a friend’s house and cried when they finally broke the curse. It was a moment I will never forget. But I have to say, I do miss the days and years that led up to that unforgettable moment.
Before you say I’m being ridiculous, think about it. Think about the fever that those Red Sox/Yankees series would bring to the city. Think about the psycho you would turn into if you were lucky enough to get tickets to a game. And think about the night they left Pedro in too long and we blew another chance to go to the World Series. I don’t think any break-up cut as deep as that night did at that time.
It’s really sad to say, but I just don’t have that feeling anymore. Ever since we won in 2004, little by little, my obsessive passion for the Sox has dissipated. I no longer watch every single game. I no longer know the batting averages of every player on the team. Hell, I don’t even KNOW every player on the team.
I’m not saying I want to go on another 86-year losing streak, but I would like to get that passion back. I want to scream Yankees Suck and feel a little hatred again. I want my day to not be complete unless I’ve seen or heard at least a few innings of a game. And I want the first sign of Spring to once again be the day the trucks pack up and leave Fenway Park for Spring Training.
I’m not saying I want us to be cursed again, and sure, I want to win another World Series. But I also want to get back that fire I felt watching my beloved Red Sox, even if they were losing. So yes, I kinda miss being a loser. And the way that they’ve been playing lately, I might get that feeling back sooner than I think!
Just my humble opinion…Pebbles
What about you? Have you lost your passion for the Red Sox? Do you miss the days when we were losers? Or is it just me? Please leave me a comment, I would love to hear what you have to say!

Pebs, I know exactly how you feel. I too am a glutton for punishment, I can still remember that night Aaron Boone hit that home run off of Wakefield and beat us to go onto the World Series.. Bad memories. The next year the Sox came back and embarrassed those damn Yanks.. Then moved on to take the World Series. One of the best memories I’ll ever have as a teenager. In this day and age, I don’t feel anymore passion from the Sox, Celtics or Pats. I remembered when the Celtics had Antoine Walker and they were 6th seed in the playoffs but went on to the Eastern Conference Finals and lost to the Nets. I do remember that 30+ point deficit the Nets had on them, but they came back and was known for the biggest comeback in Eastern Conference Finals history. Although they lost that series, I still felt that passion from watching that game. I did felt all the excitement from last years’ Celtics’ playoffs run with the Bulls, overtime after overtime, that was probably one of the last times I’ll feel that passion from a Celtics. But who knows, this series they have with the Heat will probably be exciting. No K.G. though.
This post is the understatement of the century. The Sox aren’t all that exciting to watch anymore. They just aren’t, I’m sorry to say it. I don’t know if I am older now or what, but ever since the ’04 run and the ’07 run I have been bored with the team.
I think one thing that is severely lacking is personality. Think about the Idiots of ’04…how could you not love those guys. So fun to root for and so fun to watch.
Now there is no more Manny being Manny…No more Kevin Millar…no more bloody sock, the list goes on and on. They are great memories, but there is nothing that can compare (at least with this group of Red Sox)
The Celtics on the other hand were SO much fun to watch this year. A team that nobody expected to get out of the second round (some didn’t think they’d make it past the 1st round) They had Shrek and Donkey – Ray Ray in the Finals and the domination of the fallen King. It was so fun to watch, I didn’t want it to end, whichever way it ended.
Great post Pebbles…LOVE IT!!
