Big Girls in Hollywood

March 11th, 2010

Actress…excuse me…Oscar Nominated Actress Gabourey Sidibe has been the brunt of numerous jokes and downright mean comments over the past couple days.  Since my new motto is, don’t get mad…blog, I need to address this.  The first “joke” I heard was comparing Gabourey aka Precious with the football player from The Blind Side.  I’m sure some of you are laughing as you’re reading this, but it just makes me so sad.  Even worse is Howard Stern and Robin talking about her on their radio show.  I only put it here with the hope that you will find it as awful as I do, and start to not find these vicious comments funny.

What I love about Gabby is that she loves herself.  I’m a big girl myself, and I have to say that I wish I had the confidence that she does.  I struggle with it every single day, and I hope to one day feel as comfortable in my skin as she does.  The other thing I love about her is that she is funny without making fun of herself.  Believe me, when you’re big, it’s so easy to make fun of yourself and become the brunt of all your jokes.  It’s definitely a case of making fun of yourself before someone else can.  Watching Gabby on the red carpet at the Oscars was amazing.  She was having fun, was confidently posing along with all the size zero and 2′s, and come on, she fist-bumped Keanu Reeves!  And people were excited to meet HER! I was really happy for her!

The other comment I’ve been hearing, is that people are lying to her and that she’s not going to have a successful career because of her size.  Do I think that it’s going to be easy for her?  Absolutely not.  BUT, are people forgetting the two seriously powerful people who are supporting her…Oprah and Tyler Perry.  That girl will have roles MADE for her.  She’s not going to have to worry about fitting into “Skinny Hollywood.”  I believe that she’s going to be able to write her own ticket and have a bright future. NOTE:  She just finished filmimg”Yelling to the Sky,” and has just signed a deal to appear as a recurring character on the new Showtime series “The C Word.”

The only thing that I will say about her weight is that for health reasons, it will be to her benefit to lose weight.  We all know the statistics and risks, especially for African-Americans, so I do hope that she (and me too!) lose weight so that we can live a long, happy and healthy life!

Remember, Hollywood has to listen to us.  We are the ones going to the movies, we are the ones spending money, and we are the ones who should take a stand and support good actors…and not just the skinny ones!

Just my humble opinion…Pebbles

Please leave a comment.  I would love to hear what you have to say!

I’m not really surprised that Howard Stern is the one saying this. After-all he is the guy who would have girls come in and let him throw bologna at their asses so they can win implants. I am surprised that his co host Robin was so vocal in the way she was though. I mean shes not twig and she has struggled with weight as well. I sadly agree with them though in the fact that shes not going to be a mainstream actress. I mean Queen Latifah is a bigger girl, a great actress and she was Oscar nominated too but how many roles are written for her? What has she done since Chicago to get her nominated again.
We go to the movies mainly for escape. To get away from our realities. Seeing her makes many people see their own realty. That’s why we buy airbrushed magazines and force Hollywood to be unhealthy and go toward plastic surgery. We as a public don’t want to see the truth we don;t want to see fat or wrinkle.
In the black community we accept her because our community is riddled with obesity and this idea that it’s ok to big a little bigger and it is but not to that extreme. We all know it’s not healthy right I mean High blood pressure, diabetes, asthma heart disease all of those things are waiting for Gabby if she doesn’t take control of her weight. I love that shes comfortable in her skin but that comfortable feeling might very well kill her.
I wish nothing but the best for Gabby but I think it’s naive to think she will ever be mainstream Hollywood actress. Society just isn’t ready.

Well unfortunaly this is how (some) people think. The comments regarding her being fat do not surprise me. It no longer angers me becasue me being a big girl can’t sit around thinking about my weight and other people’s problems with it. Not all big woman moan and groan about it. For most of us it is what it is and the rest of the world is who have the issue. Gabby will have a good career because she is a good actress!! Big girls can always loose the weight but a**holes will always be that: a**holes. My body smells good I shower daily if not more and I put it down on the bed room (exclusive to my fiancée). If Gabby is going to loose weight it should be for her health and for her wanting to know what it feels like to be smaller. Not for Hollywood’s sake. Pebbles you’re a beautiful woman and I hope that one day you can look beyond comparing your body to these actresses. You could look like that too if you had the money and time that it takes. Would it be great to have the perfect body? Maybe. But I guarantee YOU would not be YOU!! I hope she does well to prove these nay sayers wrong..

Side note: why is Howard Stern able to say fat black chick?? That is beyond derogatory.

I completely agree with you pepples (by the way i love you!!) haters thats what everyone is Howard Stern is just horrible anyway but as far as robin goes she should be ashamed not only the fact that she is a women but a black women at that and she should be ashamed. I really admire the way you stand up for what you believe in and i think that you are a very strong women and i like your views. i listen to u every morning and i deff. think that u balance the show. Keep standing up for what u believe in u inspire me to do the same. And i hope that Gabby makes it big. No one focuses on talent anymore its all on the looks and how well you fit in and thats sad. I hoe she proves these ignorant people wrong!!
