Apple iPad…you in?

YouTube Preview Image

Attention my fellow gadget geeks! Apple has finally given us a look at their long-awaited “tablet” they’ve named the iPad. I don’t know about you, but I’m an Apple freak and was really looking forward to seeing what they were going to give us. From the looks of things, they didn’t disappoint! I haven’t held one in my hands and had the opportunity to play with it, so I can’t really give you a review of it, but I will give you my initial thoughts.

First of all, from what I’ve seen, it looks awesome! It’s like an iPhone or iPod Touch on steroids – but in a good way! Physically, it’s stunning with a screen that measures 9.7″ diagonally, weighs 1.5lbs, is 1/2″ thick, has up to 10 hours of battery life, is wireless and has 3G models. Features include: online access, email, a photo program, video, YouTube, access to all your music, app store, and an iBooks app to download books. Apple described it as the product between a smartphone and laptop. Those are the stats, and here’s what I’m thinking.

I have been contemplating getting a Kindle and definitely wanted to wait until Apple came out with their version, expecting it to be much better than what anyone else had on the market. It looks like everything I expected and more. The problem for me is that it may be MORE than what I actually want. Again, I was looking for a better version of the Kindle, and what they’re giving me is an lighter, thinner version of my MacBook Pro. Do I really want that? That brings me to the pricing.

Based on this pricing, I have to say I’m not sure I’m in. I know myself, and I would want the top of the line device. Immediately, that means $829 because I want Wi-Fi AND 3-G. If I wasn’t attached at the hip to my MacBook, I would think about that. THEN I have a problem with having to pay for a data plan. I am not ready to add another bill to my budget.

Bottom line for me, I think it is an incredible product, and if money were no object, I would be in! If they had a model that was just an iBook model that was cheaper, I would be in. But for me, I’m not yet ready to pay that much for a product with features that I feel are already served with other products that I have. Who knows…I say that now!

Well, that’s my humble opinion. What do YOU think?  I would love to hear from you! Feel free to leave your comments below!

Kevin Federline…I Feel Your Pain!

If you’re one of those people who thinks that if someone is overweight, they need to just shut their mouths and hop on a treadmill (my radio co-host Ramiro!), I suggest you stop reading and let the rest of us bond over our eating issues. Britney Spears’ ex Kevin Federline, who is on the upcoming season on Celebrity Fit Club, recently made some statements that I can totally relate to. In an interview with Access Hollywood, he talks about how his divorce from Britney led him to depression, which played a part in his weight gain because of overeating. I can relate!

Yes, I am one of those people who “eats my feelings.”  I could be sad, angry, frustrated, bored and yes even happy, and I will overeat because of it. You know what I’m talking about. We eat ice cream after a break-up, potato chips when we’re pissed, and ___ when we’re ___. You can fill in the blanks for yourself. People who don’t do this have no idea what it feels like, and I don’t know about you, but they are no help. They actually can make it worse, get you mad, and the next thing you know you’re diving head-first into a pint of Caramel Cone Haagen-Daz.  So what do you do?

It’s funny because this was the topic in my Weight Watchers meeting this week. Most of us could relate to this emotional eating, which was no surprise. Hey, we didn’t all end up sitting on folding chairs wearing “Hi my name is…” tags for nothing. The good thing is, we didn’t all sit around having a pity party, although the short time we did was a lot of fun! We actually talked about solutions to our emotional eating.

Not to share any deep, dark WW secrets, but we talked about identifying when we are REALLY hungry and when we’re just hungry for another reason. The one sign of true hunger is that if you’re really hungry, you’ll eat an apple, vegetables or something healthy to fill that void. When you’re hungry for another reason, that’s when you find yourself looking around the house for “a little something.” That’s always when you end up eating crap, which only makes you feel guilty, and then you end up eating more because you already ruined everything so “what the hell.” Or maybe that’s just me!

The other tip that I really like is making a list of 10 fun things that you like to do. Then, the next time you’re feeling emotional, pick something on the list and do that instead of eating. That’s the challenge this week, and so far, it’s working. The only thing I won’t put on my list is watching television, because we all know that TV and snacks go hand in hand. Some of the things on my list: reading, doing some kind of arts & crafts, and going on Facebook and Twitter. Be careful though because that last one can cause another type of addiction!

If you’re like me and can relate to Kevin Federline’s depression/overeating cycle. It’s not going to be easy, but we can stop this vicious cycle. This is life…we’re still going to be stressed, get angry, bored, etc. But if we can come up with a strategy to deal with these emotions, we can make the changes we need to, and get rid of those extra pounds!

Good luck everyone and if you come across one of those “shut your mouth and get on the treadmill” people, tell them…never mind, I’ll be nice! :)

I would love to hear from you! Let me know what has helped you deal with emotional eating!  Leave a comment below!

Avatar…Believe the Hype!

I’m one of those people who hates doing things just because everyone else is doing it. It’s both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because it’s kept me from succumbing to many peer pressure situations in my life, and a curse, because it’s kept me from doing some awesome things because I didn’t want to go along with the crowd. This weekend, I went to see Avatar, and I am SO glad that I did!

My boyfriend and I were both of the same mindset that we had no desire to see, what is now on track, to be the highest grossing movie of all time. I was freaked out by the “blue people,” and didn’t really care about all the ground-breaking technology that was being used in the movie. Then I saw a special on some of that ground-breaking technology, like the special cameras that allowed director James Cameron to shoot the actor in front of him, but see them as their character through this camera. It was amazing! Then I kept hearing, not critics (because I rarely listen to them), but people I love and trust, talk about this movie like it was the greatest thing they’ve ever seen.

It made me think. Was Avatar going to be my next Titanic? To explain, one of my great regrets in life (as stupid as it may be) is that I never saw Titanic in the theater. I waited for it to come out on DVD because I refused to give in to all the hype back then that was around it. The very first time I saw it at home, regret set in and I still haven’t forgiven myself for it. Ironically, that was James Cameron’s other huge hit that holds the record that Avatar is on pace to beat.

Avatar is worth all the hype it is getting and more. It’s a very long movie, over 2 1/2 hours, but the movie has you so wrapped up in it’s beauty that you don’t mind. It is visually, one of the most stunning movies you will ever see. There were times that I was so caught up in what I was looking at that I missed out on some of the dialogue. I almost immediately lost my “freak-out” factor with the blue people, and was so intrigued by them. The look in their eyes, their expressions, and especially the way they moved were all mesmerizing.

The storyline was interesting, and I’m sure people will pull various messages from it, but it’s the breathtaking look of the movie that should drive you to the theater if you haven’t seen it yet. Do yourself a favor, make sure you see it in 3D. What an experience! I’m actually going to see it again with the whole morning show in IMAX. That’s going to be phenomenal! I saw I Am Legend at an IMAX theater, and can’t even imagine how this will compare.

So if you’re like me, stubborn, and keep saying you have no interest in Avatar and don’t care about all the hype? Don’t be ridiculous. You will be missing out on an incredible experience. I don’t want you to have “Titanic regret” like I have and years later wish you had seen it.

Once you have, let me know what you think.  Leave a comment!
